Former City of Miami Commissioner, Alex Diaz de la Portilla lost his seat when he was suspended by the governor for bribery and money laundering, among other charges. In November, he lost his election when he tried to get back in office. He also lost his house to foreclosure.

Now, his wife is divorcing him! They were not even married for a year.

Vanessa Garcia Azzam used to be his communications aide in Miami, and now she works for Miami-Dade Commissioner, Keon Hardemon. The couple were married in May of 2023.

Vanessa Garcia Azzam, 41, was on a trip with him when he went to Boston with Lawyer Lobbyist Bill Riley, who was arrested with Diaz de la Portilla back in September 2023. Diaz de la Portilla was divorced back in 2009 with a Tallahassee lobbyist, Claudia Davant.

Diaz de la Portilla was arrested back in September for money laundering and political corruption charges, including unlawful compensation, bribery and criminal conspiracy after a year-long investigation by the FDLE and the Broward County State Attorney's Office.

Bill Riley was also charged with money laundering and bribery when the investigators found that he funneled more than $245.000 from a Delaware company with Riley´s address into ADLP political action committee.

Riley represents Centner Academy, a private school that was in the national headlines in 2020 when it threatened to fire any teachers who got the COVID-19 vaccine. In 2022, Alex Diaz de la Portilla sponsored an item, approved unanimously by the commission, to let Centner Academy build a sports facility on the 3.7-acre park and provide programming.

In exchange, they get to use 33% of the public park all the time and another 33% for some hours during weekdays.

The School, where tuition can peak as high as $30.000, is across the street from the park and will use the facility for its own physical education classes and sports activities.

Last week, ADLP was granted a continuance on his criminal case, which is being prosecuted in Broward County because Miami Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle has a conflict of interest that prevents her from doing it.
